Lorsque Margaret Thatcher, première ministre du Royaume-Uni, est sur le point de rencontrer Michaël Gorbatchev en 1984 (il est sur le point de diriger l'URSS), elle est "briefée" par une taupe soviétique qui contribue à ce qu'un contact fructueux se noue : les implications seront grandes, tout comme à d'autres reprises le travail dans l'ombre de cet homme, qui agit par idéal, contribuera à dévoiler les secrets de "L'empire du mal" (selon les termes du président Reagan)."The Spy and the Traitor" est bien documenté et accessible. Toutefois je l'ai trouvé un peu trop formel, trop sobre. Je l'ai également trouvé un peu laborieux dans sa première moitié : l'exposition des personnages principaux, le récit des premières rencontres entre la taupe soviétique et le MI6, etc. m'ont semblé bien longuets et répétitifs. J'ai davantage apprécié la seconde partie du récit, quand l'étau se resserre sur notre héros.
